Microsoft Teams Phone
Turn Microsoft Teams into your company phone system.
In shortTriton VoIP turns Microsoft Teams into a full business phone system by adding external calling through Teams Phone. Using Direct Routing or Operator Connect, staff make and receive public-network calls from the Teams app they already use, with call queues, auto-attendants, number porting, and emergency calling configured correctly.
What does Teams Phone add to Microsoft Teams?
Teams Phone, formerly called Phone System, adds calling to and from the public telephone network inside the Microsoft Teams app your staff already run. With it, Teams becomes the desk phone: users dial external numbers, receive calls to a real published number, and use call queues, auto-attendants, voicemail, transfer, and delegation without a separate handset or app. Calls work from the Teams desktop client, the mobile app, the web, and certified Teams desk phones, so a single identity follows each person across every device. For organizations already standardized on Microsoft 365, this consolidates chat, meetings, and voice into one platform.
Direct Routing or Operator Connect: which path to the public network?
Teams reaches the outside network through one of three models, and the choice drives cost and control. Microsoft Calling Plans buy minutes directly from Microsoft, simplest but least flexible. Operator Connect provisions a carrier through the Teams admin center with no on-site hardware, balancing simplicity with carrier choice. Direct Routing connects a SIP trunk to Teams through a certified session border controller, giving the most control, the ability to keep your existing carrier and numbers, and typically the lowest per-minute cost at scale. Triton VoIP designs the right model for your size and calling profile rather than defaulting to one.
What licensing and infrastructure does Teams calling require?
Each calling user needs a Teams Phone license in addition to their Microsoft 365 subscription, plus a public-network connection through one of the three models above. Direct Routing additionally requires a certified session border controller, which we host or deploy and manage, connected to a SIP trunk. Emergency calling must be configured deliberately: dynamic emergency addresses and a location information service map each user and site to a dispatchable location so 911 works from Teams. Numbers are ported into Teams through the regulated portability process, and call flows are built with native Teams queues and auto-attendants.
How does Triton VoIP deliver a Teams Phone rollout?
Discovery is a fixed-fee assessment of your Microsoft 365 tenant, licensing, numbers, and call flows, with a written recommendation on connection model. Implementation is a fixed-price milestone project: session border controller or Operator Connect setup, policy and license configuration, porting, emergency-calling setup, and a tested cutover. After launch, an ongoing managed program covers changes, licensing guidance, and support, delivered by Triton Technologies, a Microsoft-experienced managed IT provider operating since 2001. Service levels are defined in your agreement.
// common questions
Microsoft Teams Phone: common questions
Do we need Teams Phone licenses for everyone?
Only users who make and receive external calls need a Teams Phone license; internal Teams calls between colleagues are already included in Microsoft 365. We review your tenant and assign paid calling licenses to the people who actually place outside calls, not the whole company.
Can we keep our existing carrier and numbers with Teams?
Yes. Direct Routing connects your chosen carrier's SIP trunk to Teams, so you are not forced onto Microsoft's minutes, and existing numbers are ported into Teams through the regulated process. Operator Connect also lets you keep a carrier relationship inside the Teams admin center.
What is the difference between Operator Connect and Direct Routing?
Operator Connect provisions a participating carrier through the Teams admin center with no on-site hardware to manage. Direct Routing connects a SIP trunk through a certified session border controller, giving more control, carrier choice, and typically a lower per-minute cost at scale. We recommend the right fit in discovery.
Does 911 work when calling from Teams?
Yes, when it is configured. Teams supports dynamic emergency addresses and a location information service so a dispatchable location travels with a 911 call, including for mobile and remote users. This setup is required by law and is part of every Teams Phone rollout we deliver.
Can we use desk phones with Teams?
Yes. Certified Teams desk phones sign in with each user's identity, and existing SIP or analog devices can connect through a gateway or session border controller. Many organizations mix Teams softphones on computers and mobiles with desk phones in shared or reception areas.
